| Q.
What is Tang Soo Do?
A. Tang Soo Do is
a Korean martial art whose roots can be traced back 2,000 years.
Tang Soo Do is based on the principles of yielding, circular motion
and penetration. Application of techniques in this manner to vital
points on the human body have no equal in power or effectiveness.
Tang Soo Do is known for its powerful kicking techniques as well.
Students of Tang Soo Do will develop self-defense skills which are
second to none. Tang Soo Do is still taught with the philosophy
and discipline of ancient times, although the system has adjusted
to the physical needs of modern lifestyles. This art was designed
to develop individual character, mental strength, integrity, and
respect for others.
Q. What is the best martial
art?
A. Good question
- what is your definition of “best”? What is great for
one, maybe not so great for another? Call around to studios and
ask. Most people wouldn't know one from the other. The correct answer
is that all systems have a particular focus, they all have strength
and weaknesses. Some focus on children and game playing, some on
street fighting, some on tumbling and dance, some on sport sparring,
some on one-on-one grappling; this list goes on and on. Most of
us will never get in a fight nor want our children to. The focus
should be providing a well-rounded program presented with respect,
discipline and professionalism that develops your character and
enhances your life yet also provides the skills necessary to defend
oneself if called upon. We at NSK strive to provide a well-rounded
program to develop the mind, body and spirit.
Q. Why are their different
colored belts and what do they represent. Why are they necessary?
A. Different colored
belts represent different stages of accomplishment . We use them
as personal achievement markers. By the nature of martial arts training
(military) they also indicate a persons rank within the organization.
They also promote organization and a sense of cooperative team responsibility
toward each other within a large group. By putting forth effort
students gain experience and rank. Rank is therefore earned and
is appreciated more. NSK has distinct requirements for each rank.
The requirements must be successfully performed to be granted a
higher rank.
Q. How long will it take to
be good at Martial Arts – How long does it take to be a black
belt?
A. To answer the
first part you need to look inside yourself. This varies with each
person and their experience . The instructors provide the knowledge
to be “good”. It is up to the student to train consistently
and properly. Remember, “If you keep doing what you’re
doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.”
In other words we cannot (and would not) wave our magic wands and
make you like Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan. You need to have the desire
and then work with it, and then work some more. Then do it all over
again. With the right attitude you can properly defend yourself
with simple white belt techniques from common attacks - usually
acquired in 2-3 months. To attain a Black Belt it normally takes
a minimum of 3-4 years of continuous training. Typically in our
style it takes 4-5 years. By the way, a black belt means you have
finally mastered the basics, now its really time to learn. This
is when the Martial Arts World truly opens up to you. You will see
things in a different light. You will appreciate things differently.
You will be different.
Q. When do I bow, and who
do I bow to?
A. Bowing is an important
show of respect. You must always bow to the flags before stepping
on and off the training floor. Always bow to the head instructor,
all black belts, and any partners you work with. If you’re
not sure whether or not you should bow, then bow anyway just to
be sure.
Q. How many classes should
I attend?
A. New students will
receive an introductory lesson to cover the basics prior to joining
regular class. This will enable the student become familiar with
the physical nature of the exercises, rules, and mental mindset
to become more comfortable. New students will participate in at
least 2 classes per week. Experienced students could take three
or more. You should practice on a regular basis and review your
manual frequently. We only have you for 2 to 3 hours per week so
to be good you have to practice. Don’t be sloppy, perfect
practice makes perfect!
Q. What do I do if I arrive
early?
A. If you arrive
for class early feel free to stretch in the back, or sit with your
legs crossed. Take care not disturb any classes that may be in session.
Q. What do I do if I arrive
to class late?
A. If you arrive
to class late, quickly and quietly come to the front of the class,
bow to the instructor, and ask permission to join the class.
